When Arizona Requires an Interlock
Arizona requires a certified ignition interlock device after every alcohol-related DUI conviction. The length of the requirement depends on the tier of the offense: 12 months for a first regular or extreme DUI, 18 months for a super extreme, and 24 months or longer for aggravated or repeat offenses.
How the Device Works
You blow into the device to start the car, and at random intervals while driving. A failed reading or a missed rolling retest is logged and transmitted to MVD by your provider. Certain readings and tampering events automatically extend the required interlock period.
Real Costs in 2026
- Installation: $75–$150
- Monthly monitoring and calibration: $75–$110
- Removal: $50–$100
- Violations and missed calibrations: add-on fees
Special Ignition Interlock Restricted Driver License (SIIRDL)
If your license is suspended, a SIIRDL lets you drive anywhere — work, school, treatment — as long as the interlock is installed. Eligibility is strict. Alternative Education Solutions walks clients through the MVD paperwork from start to finish.
Early Removal
Arizona does allow petitions for early interlock removal after a period of clean operation and completed classes. The process requires MVD forms, provider records, and sometimes a hearing. AES handles the paperwork; a DUI attorney handles the hearing if one is required.
